Abstract
PURPOSE:To enhance the reaction efficiency in the synthesis of fine glass particles from starting materials for glass and to increase the manufacturing speed of a base material for an optical fiber by adding a catalyst to accelerate the synthetic reaction. CONSTITUTION:When starting materials for glass such as SiCl4 and GeCl4, and gases for a flame such as H2, O2 and an inert gas are fed to a synthetic torch 5 to form fine glass particles, and a porous base material 1 is obtd. with the particles, gaseous propane is fed to the torch as a catalyst. As a result, fine carbon particles 4 are first formed from the propane. The particles 4 accelerate reaction synthesizing fine glass particles 3. Since the size of the carbon particles 4 is about 0.1-1mum, the particles 4 are not taken in the synthesized glass particles 3 having about 500- 5,000Angstrom size, and they are converted into gaseous CO2 at the upper part of a flame 2 after contributing to the acceleration of the reaction. Fine water droplets having about 0.5-5mum size or fine alcohol droplets are also effective as the catalyst.
