Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance the quality of a preform by previously forming the thin layer of a deposited material consisting of the fine particles of glass on the outer circumference of the glass rod of a starting material under the specified conditions and thereafter depositing the fine particles of glass on the outer circumference of this thin layer in the case of producing the preform for optical fiber with a VAD method or the like. CONSTITUTION:The fine particles of glass produced by introducing both gaseous raw material of glass and combustion gas into a burner 2 for synthesizing the fine particles of glass are deposited on the outer circumferential part of a glass rod 1 of a starting material which is made to one part of a preform for optical fiber and thereby a deposited material 4 consisting of the fine particles of glass is synthesized and the preform for optical fiber is produced by dehydrating this deposited material 4 and sintering it and making it transparent. In this case, such a process is provided that a thin deposited material 41 consisting of the fine particles of glass is firstly formed on the outer circumference of the glass rod 1 and a composite 21 consisting of the glass rod 1 and the thin layer of the deposited material 41 is formed. In this process, the molar ratio of Si contained in the raw material of glass jetted through the burner 2 for synthesizing the fine particles of glass and hydrogen atom contained in fuel is regulated to (1:4)-(1:15). Successively furthermore the fine particles of glass are deposited on the outer circumference of the composite 21.
