Abstract

PURPOSE: Mill scale, straight or after combined with zero or divalent iron compound, is treated with an aqueous alkali to produce hexagonal platelets of α-iron oxide inexpensively in high efficiency.
CONSTITUTION: Mill scale, straight or after a zero- or divalent iron compound is added thereto, is treated with an aqueous alkali. The zerovalent iron is an iron powder or reduced iron and the divalent iron is ferrous sulfate or ferrous chloride. The alkali is, e.g., sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide and the concentration is 2W23N. The treating temperature is about 120W180°C. Subsequently, the product is heat treated together with an oxidizing agent in an aqueous alkali to produce hexagonal plates of α-iron oxide (MIO).
