Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare iron oxyhydroxide in an extremely short reaction time, by adding an aqueous solution of an alkali ferrate to an alkaline aqueous solution and decomposing the alkali ferrate.
CONSTITUTION: The alkali ferrate used as the starting material is represented by the general formula M2FeO4 (M is Na or K), e.g. sodium ferrate or potassium ferrate. The concentration of the alkali ferrate depends upon the use of the produced iron oxyhydroxide; however, it is generally about 0.1W20wt% as Fe2O3. The alkali used in the alkali decomposition is sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide, and its amount is usually about ≤40wt% as MOH. The reaction system may contain a reducing agent such as ferrous sulfate, ferrous chloride, etc., a modifier such as a metal salt, e.g. Co++, Ni++, Zn++, etc. or an assistant such as sodium phosphate.
