Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a highly electrically conductive copper alloy, by dispersing a part of an element being added to copper in the form of oxide, and solidifying the remaining part within the copper.
CONSTITUTION: The second element that will be added to copper may be an element of which the free energy of formation of the oxide (-ΔG°) is greater than that of H2O(-ΔG°), but it will be practical to select from Zr, Al, Mg, Be, Ti, Mn, Zn and Sn. To prepare the alloy, electrolytic copper is melted under an atmosphere of an inert gas in a high frequency melting pit through which the atmosphere can be regulated, the concentration of oxygen in the copper is controlled by the addition of a deoxidizer not to exceed for the concentration of the second element, and thereafter the second element for example Al in the form of Cu-Al alloy is added. When the mixture is stirred, part of Al is oxidized in the molten state, and is dispersed in the form of the oxide into the Cu, and the remaining part of Al is occluded into the Cu.
