Abstract

PURPOSE: The titled normally liquid resin useful for bonding polyurethanes, being low in content of unreacted phenol and having benzyl ether, methylol and methylene groups.
CONSTITUTION: A phenol formaldehyde resin having benzyl ether, methylol and methylene groups, is so designed that the content of free phenol is 10% or lower, the resin is a stable liquid at normal temperature, and the methylol/benzyl ratio is 0.5W 2.5. This resin can be prepared by reacting a phenol with a formaldehyde in an aqueous system to obtain a precondensate mixture containing unreacted monomers and water, passing the mixture through a long heated tube to vaporize the water and the unreacted monomers and at the same time polycondensate the precondensate, introducing the product into an atmosphere at a reduced pressure and a temperature ≥100°C, and removing the vaporized water and unreacted monomers out of the system and recovering the produced resin. This resin can be suitably used in curing a polyisocyanate containing at least two isocyanate groups by formation by urethane bonds.
