Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain titled resin having a low methylol content and excellent heat stability, by reacting a phenol with formaldehyde in the presence of a catalyst under a neutral, high-concentration and low-temperature condition and then again the product under a weakly acidic and high-temperature condition.
CONSTITUTION: One (1)mol of a phenol is reacted with 1.5W3mol of high-concentration formaldehyde, purity ≥45%, at a pH of 6W8 and a temperature up to 100°C for 2W4hr by use of an alkaline earth metal hydroxide, e.g., calcium hydroxide or barium hydroxide. Then, the self-curing phenol resin of the purpose is obtained by adding an acid such as hydrochloric acid in an amount to adjust the reaction mixture at a pH of 4W6 and again the mixture at a temperature ≥100°C for 2W3hr. The resin thus-produced has a free-phenol content ≤6%, a number average MW exclusive of free phenol of 800W1,200, a low content of methylol groups attached to the phenol nucleus and a high content of diethylene ether groups attached to the phenol nucleus.
