Abstract

PURPOSE: A stabilized high-concentration formaldehyde composition resulting from the air oxidation of methanol is incorporated with melamine and the composition is reacted with urea to obtain said solid urea resin with reduced tackiness and good processability.
CONSTITUTION: A formaldehyde composition made by the air oxidation of methanol is mixed with melamine to form a stabilized high-concentration formaldehyde composition mainly consisting of 50W73 wt% of formaldehyde, 0W6 wt% of methanol, 5W20 wt% of melamine and water. The resulting formaldehyde composition is made to react with urea in a ratio of 5 or more parts of melamine per 100 parts of urea and dehydrated. The reaction system is preferably kept no less than 6.5 in pH. When guanidine carbonate is used as an alkali catalyst for controlling pH, it is scarcely affected during the reaction.
