Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the title resin having low water content and low residual aldehyde, useful as a binder of cellulosic filler, by reacting urea with formaldehyde pepared by the air oxydation of methanol, and further reacting the product with melamine.
CONSTITUTION: A composition composed of 50W73 wt% of formaldehyde (F), 7W20% of urea (U), and 0W6 wt% of methanol, is prepared by oxidizing methanol with air, and dissolving the product in urea. The ratio of F/U is adjusted between 1.2 and 2.5, to afford a reaction mixture. Before the reaction mixture loses its clarity, 5 parts of melamine, based on 100 parts of urea, is added thereto, and made to react in the presence of an alkaline catalyst such as guanidine carbonate, at pH≥6.5, and 40W70°C. The objective solid urea resin is obtained by dehydrating the resulting resin syrup.
