CONSTITUTION: The reaction of a difunctional phenol as terpene phenol or p-cresol with formaldehyde is effected in the presence of an alkaline catalyst of 10 or more pKa as tertiary amine to form oligomers including less than 15 benzene nuclei, preferably 2W6 nuclei. Then, a polyfunctional phenol as m-cresol and formaldehyde are added to the oligomers 0.3W5 times the quantity of the oligomers and they are made to react in the presence of 0.02W0.005mol, per mole of the polyfunctional phenol, of an alkaline catalyst of 10 or more pKa as tertiary amin to produce the objective phenolic resin.
