Abstract
PURPOSE:To lower the nonmetallic inclusions of nonstretching type and to obtain a high carbon steel wire rod of high quality by subjecting a steel of a limited atm. of C and Mn/Si and a suppressed total amt. of Al to be added during production to vacuum are degassing treatment by the use of special slag. CONSTITUTION:The total amt. of the Al to be mixed during production of the high carbon steel of Mn/Si controlled to >=1.7 and of an amt. of C limited to 0.25- 1.00% is kept at below 10g per ton of the molten steel. The steel produced under such conditions is treated by using CaO-SiO2 type slag in a vacuum degassing device, to separate by flotation the nonmetallic inclusions of nonstretching type of Al2O3, SiO2, MnO and their composite systems in the molten steel. By this treatment, Al2O3 is reduced down to a trace of about <=20ppm. According to this method, the high carbon steel wire rod which is superior in drawability and provides outstanding mechanism properties as an extra fine steel wire after drawing is obtained.
