Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a high carbon steel wire rod of less nonmetallic inclusions, and superior drawability inexpensively in high efficiency by treating the steel specified of the contents of Mn/Si and C, and the amt. of addition of Al with CaO-SiO2 type slag in a vacuum arc degassing device, and casting the same continuously under electromagnetic stirring.
CONSTITUTION: A steel is produced by setting the total amt. of inclusion of Al to be added to the molten steel of a high carbon steel of 0.25W1.00% C prepd. to ≥1.7 Mn/Si at ≤10g per ton of the molten steel. This steel is treated by using CaO-SiO2 type slag in a vacuum arc degassing device to reduce the nonmetallic inclusions of the composite system in the molten steel to a trace. Thence, it is cast under electromagnetic stirring by a continuous casting device. Here, the reason for the use of the slag of the SiO2-CaO type lies in the acceleration of absorption of the floating nonmetallic inclusions such as Al2O3 and the conditions such as degrees of vacuum, treating time, and the like are so set that the molten steel contains about ≤20ppm Al2O3.
