Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture the titled alloy having characteristics which bring on less change in the hydrogenation pressure to the composition of hydride in the plateau range by heat treating a misch metal-nickel quaternary alloy at a specified temp. CONSTITUTION:An alloy represented by the formula (where Mm is misch metal; A is Al, Co, Cr, Mn or Si; B is Al, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn or Si; A is always different from B; x is 0.1-2; y is 0.01-1.99; when A co, x is 0.1-4.9 and y is 0.01-4.89; and x>y) is heat treated at 500-1,000 deg.C for 0.25-6hr under reduced pressure or in an inert gaseous atmosphere, and the treated alloy is cooled. Thus, unstable lattice gaps produced in the manufacture of the alloy disappear, so a single-phase alloy is obtd. Since this alloy reacts with hydrogen at a higher reaction rate in a hydrogen occluding and releasing process, the time required to complete the reaction is shortened, and the occlusion of hydrogen is finished in a shorter time.
