Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide an alloy for occluding hydrogen consisting of a rare earth metal, Ni, Al and Co represented by a specified general formula and having low hysteresis of hydrogen occluding and releasing pressures.
CONSTITUTION: This alloy for occluding hydrogen is represented by a general formula RNi5-xAlxCoy (where R is a rare earth metal, 0<y≤0.2, and R may be misch metal). This alloy is obtd. by adding Co to an alloy represented by RNi5-xAlx, and in the presence of Co the hysteresis of hydrogen occluding and releasing pressures is reduced remarkably. As compared to the alloy not contg. Co, the hydrogen occluding pressure is not almost changed, and only the hydrogen releasing pressure is raised to reduce the hysteresis, so this alloy is advantageous to the design of a metallic hydride reactor. The details of the action of Co are not known, yet it is certain that Co gives a subtle change to the crystal structure of an RNi5 type metallic compound, and when y>0.2, the RNi5 type metallic compound is not formed.
