Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain high purity H2 without supplying power from the outside of the system by combining two or more kinds of metal hydrides having different H2 equilibrium pressure characteristics and by successively shifting crude H2 to metal hydride having a higher H2 equilibrium pressure while repeating occlusion and release of H2 by a temp. rise and a temp. drop within a desired temp. range.
CONSTITUTION: Metal hydride X, e.g., Ca-Ni alloy has H2 equilibrium pressures P1 and P1' at temps. t1 and t2, and metal hydride Y, e.g., La-Ni alloy has pressures P2 and P2' at the same temps. Crude H2 is contacted to alloy X at temp. t1, and by slowly raising the temp. alloy X occludes H2 along straight line AWB. H2 corresponding to pressure P1' is occluded in alloy X at temp. t2, at the temp. impurities are purged instantaneously, and the temp. is dropped. If alloy Y is pressent at this time, without using a compressor H2 is occluded in alloy Y, and release and occlusion of H2 proceed along straight line BWC. Alloy Y is then separated, and by raising the temp. to temp. t2, H2 is occluded along straight line CWD. Thus, occlusion and release of H2 are repeated to remove impurities in crude H2.
