Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an inexpensive alloy for storing hydrogen capable of reversibly occluding and releasing hydrogen in a stable manner by adding Ti, Zr, Mn and Fe in a specified ratio.
CONSTITUTION: This alloy for storing hydrogen has a composition represented by a general formula ZrxTi1-x(FeyMn1-y)z (where 0.2≤x≤0.8, 0.2≤y≤0.8 and 1.3≤ z≤1.7). These 4 kinds of metals are easily alloyed with each other and form such a simple 4-component intermetallic compound in the fixed component range. This alloy for occluding hydrogen is not required to be finely pulverized. It is coarsely crushed and put in a container. This container is evacuated at room temp., and by introducing hydrogen into the container under about 0.1W4MPa pressure at room temp., the alloy occludes the hydrogen. The resulting hydride releases hydrogen at a relatively low temp., or under reduced pressure, and it returns metallographically to the original alloy again.
