Abstract

1,248,184. Reactors. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 23 Feb., 1970 [3 April, 1969], No. 8519/70. Heading G6C. [Also in Divisions C7 and H1] A getter consisting of an alloy of Y with at least one of Zr, Ti, Nb, Hf, Mo, Ta, W and V or a binary alloy of Y with up to 10% Al, 45% Be, 15% Co, 35% Cu, 50% Fe, 35% Mg, 15% Ni, 50% Mn or 40% Zn, the Y being in a separate phase in the alloy is contained in a sealed UO 2 nuclear fuel element and in the walls of a nuclear reactor pressure vessel to absorb H 2 from the walls and from the space within the element or vessel. The element may have a Zr alloy or steel casing which contains one or several getter bodies, alternatively the casing may be coated with getter material.
