Abstract
1,211,886. Porous metal hydride bodies. MARTIN MARIETTA CORP. 15 Nov., 1967 [15 Nov., 1966], No. 52032/67. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C7] A porous metal hydride body is produced by sintering and hydriding a compact of spheroidal particles of the metal. The metal may be Y, U, Zr, Nb, Pt, Ta, Ca, Ba, Ti or alloys thereof. The production of Zr hydride, e.g. ZrH 1 . 8 , ZrH 1 . 99 , or ZrH 1 . 58 , is exemplified. The spheroidal particles may be formed by arc plasma spraying in Ar. The body may be sintered in vacuo or in Ar, He, or Xe, e.g. at 1400 C. or 1177 C. H 2 may be introduced during or after sintering at a temperature of at least 400 C., e.g. 550 C. or 770 C., at a pressure up to 10 atm. The body is then cooled in H 2 . The examples give the particle size distribution of the spheroidal Zr particles used.
