Abstract

Pellets or briquettes contg. a pre-alloy or metal and employed in the prodn. of aluminium alloys contain in addn. to the finely divided metal or pre-alloy, a flux which evolves gas when placed in the molten bath of metal. The wt. ratio of metal to flux is pref. between 1:1 and 20:1, and the pref. flux is eiher (a) a halo-hydrocarbon which is solid at room temp. esp. hexachloroethane; or (b) a salt mixt. of alkali (ne earth) metal(s) and/or aluminium, at least one salt evolving gas in the molten bath. Simplifies the addn. and dissolution of alloying elements such as Mn, Cu, Fe, Si, Ni, Zn, Co, Cr, Bi, Cd, Zr, Be or B in molten aluminium to obtain the correct compsn. prior to casting despite differences in density and/or slow dissolution speeds. The rapid and uniform distribution of the allowing element(s) throughout the bath, obviates the slow and arduous hand stirring previously necessary.
