Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a highly reliable liquid crystal display element by using frit and a sealing material of org. type as a sealing material for sealing the circumference of the glass substrates attached with two sheets of upper and lower electrodes. CONSTITUTION:Orientation films 3 are formed on glass substrates 1, 2 attached with two sheets of upper and lower electrodes, after which they are rubbed. Next, frit 4 is printed on the circumference of the substrate 1, and an org. sealing material (e.g.; polybenzimidazole type adhesive) 5 is coated by printing on the circumference of the substrate 2 in a manner as to be located on the outer side of the frit 4. Thence, the substrates 1, 2 are affixed together, and while they are being clamped, they are passed through a firing furnace and are thereby bonded, after which a liquid crystal 6 is put to the inside thereof and is sealed, thence polarizing plates are affixed. Then, when the element is stored for a long time in a highly moist state, the entry of moisture into the liquid crystal element from its circumference does not occur, and the blurring of the electrodes does not occur.
