Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the plastical workability of an Al-Mn-Zn alloy without harming its pitting-corrosion resistance, by lowering Mn content of the alloy and adding very small amounts of Cu and/or Si into the alloy.
CONSTITUTION: One or both of 0.01W0.50% Cu and 0.05W1.0% Si are added into an Al-Mn-Zn alloy containing 0.10W1.0% Mn and 0.05W2.0% Zn in addition to Al. Mn content is lowered as compared with a conventional Al-Mn alloy, so that the deformation resistance of the alloy during plastical working, e.g. extrusion at a high temperature or the like, is small. Besides, its pitting-corrosion resistance is excellent due to the addition of Zn. Moreover, the alloy is changed to an electrochemically noble state by the addition of Cu and Si. Consequently, the alloy is useful as a pipe for a heat exchanger.
