Abstract
PURPOSE:To provide a fixed color display of sharp characters, symbols, etc. by applying the voltage higher than driving voltage to liquid crystals in a display device having a negative dielectric anisotropic liquid crystal layer dissolved with dichromatic dyes. CONSTITUTION:The guest-host type liquid crystal display device grasping a liquid crystal layer 17 having negative dielectric anisotropy between respectively two sheets of substrates 11, 16 applied with orientation treatments 13, 14 is made by the azoxy type nematic liquid crystals or benzylidene aniline type nematic liquid crystals dissoled with dichromatic dyes which are anthraquinone type or azo type dyes. Fixed display transparent electrodes 12a and operation display transparent electrodes 12b are provided on the substrate 11, and a common electrode 15 is provided on the substrate 16. The voltage higher than driving voltage of the operation display parts is applied for a constant time on the fixed display parts 12a, so that the liquid crystals 18a and dichromatic dyes 19a are permanently horizontaly oriented. In this way, the sharp color fixed display patterns are obtained with the same accuracy as that of the operation display parts 12b.
