Abstract

PURPOSE: To make possible dynamic and static driving by inserting a polarizing plate having the polarization direction matched to the liquid crystal molecular polarization direction on the wall surface on the incident light side of a guest-host type cell having twisted structure to the front face of the cell and providing a polarization plate having the same polarization direction in opposition to part of the back face.

CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal cell 11 has the twisted structure in which a color liquid composition added with, for example, D5 (blue) made of BDH as a dichromatic dye at several % to a positive nematic liquid crystal (host) is inserted between two sheets of parallel electrode substrates. A polarizing plate 14 having the polarization direction 15 parallel to the orientation direction 12 of the molecules on the wall surface 11a on the incident side of the cell is provided between a light source 18 and the cell 11, and a polarizing plate 16 of a blue color having the same polarization direction is provided in opposition to part on the back face 11b of the cell. When driven dynamically, the display looks blue when no voltage is applied and white when applied with voltage. The parts where there is no polarizing plate 16 are used for static driving. Thereby, the dynamic and static driving may be accomplished with one sheet of the cell.
