Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an aqueous solution of purified alkali metal chloride having low COD, by contacting an aqueous solution of crude alkali metal chloride obtained as a by-product of the dehydrochlorination process of 1,1,2-trichloroethane, with a solution of an alkali hypochlorite in the presence of nickel oxide.
CONSTITUTION: In the preparation of vinylidene chloride by the reaction of 1,1,2- trichlorolethane with a caustic alkali (e.g. caustic soda), the aqueous solution of alkali metal chloride obtained as a by-product is mixed with an aqueous solution of nickel oxide (Ni2O3, NiO2) and an aqueous solution of an alkali hypochlorite, and the mixture is stirred at room temp. W about 80°C for several min W several hours. The amount of the nickel oxide added to the solution is ≥ about 1g per 100ml of the aqueous solution of alkali metal chloride. A purified aqueous solution of alkali metal chloride having a COD concentration of ≤ about 15ppm can be prepared extremely easily by the process.
