Abstract
PURPOSE: To enhance the adhesiveness of silver to active carbon and to keep silver bleeding at a proper level, by having an easily water-soluble silver salt adsorbed onto active carbon, reacting the silver salt with the active carbon to form a difficultly water-soluble silver halide, and then injecting steam into the treated active carbon at a specified temperature.
CONSTITUTION: A silver salt easily soluble in water, e.g. silver nitrate or the like, is made to be adsorbed onto active carbon, and converted into a difficultly water- soluble silver halide in a conventional chemical reaction. Thereafter, steam is injected into the treated active carbon in a vessel at a temperature slightly lower than the melting point of the difficultly water-soluble silver halide, to produce silver- impregnated active carbon. Excess chlorine is desorbed from the active carbon by decomposition with the steam injection. Consequently, the product does not contain excess chlorine. As a result, the silver-impregnated active carbon excellent in the adhesiveness of silver to active carbon, which can be used for a long time while keeping silver bleeding at a proper level, can be obtained.
