Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate ammonium chloride into ammonia and hydrogen chloride by circulating a metal cpd. as an intermediate substance and by combining two thermochemical reactions.
CONSTITUTION: By the reaction of ammonium chloride and metal oxide, ammonia and metal chloride are formed, and the metal chloride is reacted with water to give hydrogen chloride and metal oxide. For example, in case magnesium is used as the above metal, ammonium chloride and magnesium oxide are dry-mixed, and the mixt. is heated to about 150W450°C to form ammonia and magnesium chloride as shown by equation I. This magnesium chloride and steam are reacted at about 180W800°C to give magnesium oxide and hydrogen chloride as shown by equation II, and the magnesium oxide is recycled. Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, etc. are pref. used as the metal besides Mg.
