Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover ammonium sulfate and ammonium nitrate separately from the byproducts of waste gas treatment process using radiation, by a procedure in which ammonium sulfate is obtained from gypsum formed an aqueous solution of the byproducts and also ammonium nitrate is obtained from the residue deprived of gypsum.
CONSTITUTION: A powdery solid substance containing ammonium sulfate and ammonium sulfate-ammonium nitrate double salt as the main components, or the byproducts of the waste gas treatment process in which a radiant ray is irradiated on the waste water, is dissolved in water, and then Ca(OH)2 is added to the solution to form gypsum. The gypsum thus formed is reacted with carbon dioxide gas and ammonia to obtain ammonium sulfate, and then ammonium nitrate is obtained from the residue deprived of gypsum. The preferred amount of water to add to said byproducts is such as to dissolve the byproducts in a byproduct/water ratio of 2 or less, more preferably of 1W1/10 by weight, although usually depending upon the reaction conditions in the subsequent process.
