Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain marked reaction effect in wide application range by performing a chlorine oxidation for decomposing ammonium compounds into nitrogen at 70°C or more in an alkaline solution.
CONSTITUTION: A solution containing ammonium compounds such as NH4Cl, is made alkaline by the addition of CaCl2 or CaCO3 or without these compounds and then reacted with chlorine or a hypochlorite supplied at 70°C or more. The amount of a small amount of nitrates formed during the reaction is reduced by CaCl2 or CaCO3 added in the solution. This method can perform a discontinuous chlorine oxidation by extending from neutral region to alkaline region, thus permitting the effective decomposition of ammonium compounds present in waste water into nitrogen.
