Abstract

PURPOSE: A four step thermochemical reaction of aqueous sulfite solution, I2, and FeI2 is used to provide H2 in a high yield, high reaction velocity, and facilitated separation of reaction products.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous sulfite solution with 3 to 10% SO3 concentration, I2, and FeI2 are mixed and heated to 100 to 200°C to be evaporated and solidified, while reacting each other according to the formula (I). The so formed FeSO4 hydrous salt is heated to about 800°C, whereby the decomposition occurs as known according to the formula (II). The resultant Fe2O3 powder is reacted with a part (3/4) of HI gas obtained in the formula (I), as shown in the formula (III) at 150 to 200°C. The remaining HI (1/4) is reacted at 300 to 700°C to perform the reaction of the formula (IV), as generally known. In this process, the reactions of (I) and (III) proceed in high velocity to complete the reactions in about 10 minutes, while giving a yield of greater than 80%, the reaction products being separated very easily.
