Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the sensing element which is characterized by high sensitivity for methane gas and isobutane gas, low sensitivity for steam, alcohol, and the like, and excellent selectivity, by adding PdO to the main component of rare earth oxide at a specified ratio. CONSTITUTION:The main component comprises one or more kinds of rare earth oxide, such as CeO2, Y2O3, Eu2O3, Sc2O3, Gd2O3, and Sm2O3. The combustible sensing element is prepared by adding PbO to the main component at the ratio of 10-20wt% of PdO of the total weight of the main component and PdO. The rare earth oxide (raw material may be chloride or sulfide) and PdO are blended and crushed at said ratio together with a necessary binder component and the like. Then the element is formed in a cylindrical form and the like by pressing, with Pt wire electrodes being embedded. The product is burned in the air at a specified temperature in an electric furnace, and a gas sensing body is formed. The sensing body is mounted on an alumina stem in which a heater is provided, and covered by a wire meshed cap. Thus the gas sensing element is obtained.
