Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the durability and electrolyte-soaking characteristic of a fuel cell by adding a fibrous material of a metal oxide in an electrolyte matrix. CONSTITUTION:A pair of gas diffusion electrodes 2, 3 and a pair of gas separating plates 4, 5 of a substance such as carbon are provided in such a manner as to hold an electrolyte matrix 1 therebetween, thereby to form a fuel cell. The matrix 1 is formed by binding powder of a metal oxide or metal carbide alone or a mixture thereof with fluororesin so as to soak it with a phosphoric acid electrolyte of the fuel cell. A fibrous material of a metal oxide such as alumina, silica, zirconia, or a tantalum oxide is included in the matrix 1. Aggregated cut fibers of, for example 2-3mu in diameter and 2-10mm. in length, are used as the fibrous material.
