Abstract
PURPOSE:To increase the amount of phosphoric acid to be carried and to improve the performance of a cell by a construction wherein a matrix carrying phosphoric acid between gas diffused electrodes of a fuel cell is formed of a multiple oxide mainly composed of zirconium oxide and a binder. CONSTITUTION:Carbon powder carrying platinum is applied onto carbon paper to form a gas diffused electrode. The electrodes are used as the anode (fuel electrode) 2 and the cathode (air electrode) 3 and a matrix 1 carrying phosphoric acid is provided between the electrodes 2, 3 to form a fuel cell. A solution with tetrafluoroethylene fine powder, for instance, as a binder suspended in water, is added to zirconium (ZrSiO4) fine powder, for instance, as a multiple oxide mainly composed of zirconium oxide in order to prepare a mixture. The mixture is heated and made to carry phosphoric acid to make the matrix 1.
