Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent passages for both a fuel gas and an oxidizing gas from being blocked, obviate any elution and swelling of ditches formed on a bipolar separator, the surface of which is provided with the passages for supplying the reaction gases, and thereby stabilize the performance of a fuel cell by performing water repellent treatment over the surface of the separator. CONSTITUTION:Both surfaces of a bipolar separator 16 are provided with ditches 17 and 18 which serve as passages for gases. The entire surface of the separator 16 has a water repellent coating 20 which works against electrolyte. The separator 16 is prepared from a material consisting of, for example, 80% of a graphite and 20% of a phenol resin. The coating 20 is prepared from a material which is thermally and chemically stable at an operational temperature, such as fluoroethane propylene resin or 4-fluoroethane resin. Mixtures 1 and 3, each of which consists of activated carbon and platinum, are applied to carbon papers 2 and 4 before they are sintered, a fuel electrode and an air electrode being made, respectively. These electrodes are laminated with the bipolar separator 16 interposed between them. After that, an electrolyte-holding layer 5 made of a nonwoven cloth is impregnated with a phosphoric acid electrolyte, thus a fuel cell being constituted.
