Abstract
PURPOSE: To facilitate the control of the inner diameter, and to obtain a glass capillary having high strength, by drawing a glass tube to a capillary, wherein the drawing process is carried out by introducing compressed gas into the tube through one open end while heating and softening the other end of the tube from the outside.
CONSTITUTION: Compressed nitrogen gas is introduced into the glass tube 12 through the gas introducing pipe 14 which is extended through the upper lid 13 to the glass tube 12. The lower end of the glass tube 12 is heated with a ring furnace 18 surrounding the lower end. The softened glass tube tends to contract by the force of surface tension. The inner surface of the contracting glass tube 12 and the drawn capillary 19 are expanded from the inside by the pressure of the nitrogen gas. The size of the glass capillary 19 is controlled thereby under the conditions to eliminate the effect of the surface tension. The drawn capillary 19 is wound continuously with a winder 20, and the winding speed is controlled to keep the outer diameter of the capillary detected by the outer diameter detector 21 at a definite level.
