Abstract
PURPOSE:To make the outer diameter of a drawn glass rod uniform, by scanning and measuring the outer diameter of the heat-drawn part of the glass rod, detecting the point to complete the deformation of the rod, and controlling the drawing so as to get the outer diameter of the point within a preset range. CONSTITUTION:The outer profile of the glass rod 1 at the heating and drawing zone 5 is detected with an ITV camera 8, and the outer diameters d1...dn at the positions y1...yn along the longitudianl direction are digitized with the signal processor 9, stored successively in the memory 10, and transmitted to the optimum outer diameter processor 11. The point to complete the deformation in the drawing zone 5 is determined from the relationship between the zone in which the diameter of the glass rod 1 varies and the zone having uniform diameter. When the outer diameter at the point to complete the deformation is deviated out of the permissible range, the predetermined output signal is transmitted from the optimum outer diameter processor 11 to the outer diameter controlling device 12, which controls the outer diameter by adjusting the pulling rate V2 of the chuck holding the glass rod 1.
