Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture a base material for an optical fiber used in a 2-way synthesizing and branching filter, etc. by arranging a desired number of preform rods i na quartz pipe and packing the gap with quartz glass filaments. CONSTITUTION:Both ends of preform rods 1a, 1b are melt-bonded to supports 2 made of quartz, and a quartz pipe 3 is set around the rods 1a, 1b so that the rods are positioned at prescribed places of the radius of the pipe 3. The gap among the rods 1a, 1b and the pipe 3 is then packed with quartz glass filaments 4 having 200-500mum diameter. After sealing one end of the pipe 3 by intense heating with an oxyhydrogen flame, the pipe 3 is collapsed by drawing from the sealed end in a vacuum to obtain a base material for an optical fiber while inhititing the formation of bubbles. Only cores or cores coated with clads are used as the preform rods of the resulting base material, and the number, diameter, diameter and positions can be selected arbitrarily.
