Abstract
PURPOSE:To uniformly bulge an upright starting quartz pipe by coaxially placing cylindrical dies around the pipe to apply an internal pressure as well as heat soften the pipe in the manufacture of a base material for a single-mode fiber. CONSTITUTION:Cylindrical dies 32 made of heat resistant material is supported upright in body 34 of high frequency furnace 30, and starting quartz pipe 14 is placed in dies 32 coaxially and upright. Pipe 14 is softened by heating dies 32 to about 1,550 deg.C with high frequency coil 42, and an internal pressure is applied to pipe 14 to bulge pipe 14 until it contacts with dies 32. After cooling pipe 14 with gaseous nitrogen or the like spouted from holes 46, glass is deposited on pipe 14 by an ordinary method to obtain a base material for a single-mode fiber with little change in the outside diameter and superior characteristics.
