Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce optimal inertial supercharging effects in respective regions of rotation of an engine, by providing a partition wall to define an intake manifold of double structure and using a changeover valve to alter the substantial length of the intake manifold in the slow or rapid rotation of the engine.
CONSTITUTION: A partition wall 12 is provided upsteam to branched manifolds 4W6, which constitute the intake manifold 2 of an engine 1, so that a chamber 7 of required capacity is defined. The partition wall 12 is provided with openings 10, 11 in positions corresponding to the branched manifolds 4, 5. A communication opening 8 is provided near the air inlet part 3 of the chamber 7. An opening/ closing valve 9 is installed in the opening 8. When the engine 1 is rotating slowly, the valve 9 is closed so that the chamber 7 substantially functions as a wall and the length of the branched manifolds 4W6 is set at A-B, A-C and A-D as in conventional cases. When the engine 1 is rotating rapidly, the valve 9 is opened so that the chamber 7 is set at the atmospheric pressure and the substantial length of the branched manifolds 4W6 is shortened to B'-B, C'-C and D'-D.
