Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficiently manufacture a high quality composite material at a low cost by heating a reinforcing material packed in the molding chamber of a container to a temp. above m.p. of a matrix metal, pouring the molten matrix metal, and pressurizing it to discharge air in the reinforcing material into an air chamber.
CONSTITUTION: A reinforcing mateial such as alumina fiber 1 is oriented in one direction and packed in a case 2, and an air chamber 3 is formed at one end of the closed case. After heating the fiber 1 in the case 2 to a temp. above the m.p. of a matrix metal, the case 2 is set in a metallic mold 5 heated to a suitable temp. in a floating state by means of a stand 4. The molten matrix metal is quickly poured into the mold 5 and pressurized by a plunger element 6 at a suitable temp. This pressurized state is held until the molten metal is solidified thoroughly. During this time, air in the fiber 1 is pressed by the molten metal and discharged into the air chamber 3, so the bonding strength of the fiber 1 to the matrix metal is enhanced.
