Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture a good quality composite material composed of matrix metal and a reinforcing material by heating a container packed with a porous reinforcing material to above melting temperature of the matrix metal and pressurizing after immersing in molten matrix metal. CONSTITUTION:A necessary quantity of porous material 1 such as alumina fiber is disposed in one direction as a reinforcing material and packed in a stainless steel case 2. After heating to 750 deg.C, which is higher than melting temperature of Al as a matrix metal, it is placed on a stand 4 in a container 5 heated to 300 deg.C. The molten metal of Al is then quickly charged into the container 5, and the surface of Al is pressed at a pressure of 1,000kg/cm<2> by a plunger element 6. The molten metal of Al is infiltrated into the reinforcing material 1 of alumina fiber and solidified. It is then taken out from the case 2 to obtain a composite material composed of alumina fiber as reinforcing material and Al as matrix.
