Abstract
PURPOSE: To manufacture a composite material having excellent tensile strength and other mechanical strength at high temperature by a method in which a bundle of graphite or ceramic fibers is dipped in a liquid containing metal components to cover the surfaces of the fibers with a metal and then baked.
CONSTITUTION: A bundle 1A of graphite or ceramic fibers is passed through a heater 12 for dehumidification and dehydrogenation treatments. Then, the bundle is passed through a separator 11 under the guidance of a roll 7 and then sent into a container 10, where the bundle is dipped in a dip liquid 8, e.g., a dispersion of Al, Cu, Ni, or other metal powder, a both liquid of a metallic salt capable of depositing the a metal, or a metal plating liquid in order to cover the surfaces of the fibers with a metal of a given thickness by a proper method. Then, the fiber bundle so treated is dried in a drying and baking furnace 13, drawn out by rolls 6, and then sent into a sinter 19, where the fibers covered with a metal are sintered to produce a composite material 1 having excellent tensile strength and other mechanical strengths at high temperatures.
