Abstract
PURPOSE: To efficiently manufacture a metal-base composite material of high performance at a low cost by putting a reinforcing material in a container, heating it to a temp. above the m.p. of a matrix metal, and applying a high pressure casting method.
CONSTITUTION: A reinforcing material 1 such as fibers, thin wire rods, powder or whiskers of B, C, Al2O3, SiC or the like is packed into the molding chamber of a container 2 made of stainless steel or the like so as to form a porous structure and an air chamber 3 at one end of the container 2. The material 1 is heated to a temp. above the m.p. of a metal such as Al used as a matrix metal, and the container 2 is set in a container receiving chamber 5. The molten matrix metal 8 is introduced into a pressurizing chamber 7 and solidified while applying a pressure to the metal with a plunger element 9. Since a heat insulating space 6 exists between the container 2 and a metallic mold 4, the molten metal 8 does not solidify rapidly and permeates well into the reinforcing material 1.
