Abstract

PURPOSE: To considerably enhance the mechanical strength of the titled composite material by adding a metallic element reducing the surface tension of matrix metals when added and having lower reactivity with inorg. fiber than the metals to the metals.
CONSTITUTION: A fiber reinforced metallic composite material is composed of inorg. fiber as the reinforcing material and a metal or metals such as an alloy as the matrix. To the matrix metals is added ≥1 kind of metallic element having the following properties. The element is required to reduce the surface tension of the metals when added to the metals. Accordingly, the concn. of the added element on the surface of the metals is higher than the average concn. of the added element in the alloy. The element is further required to have lower reactivity with the inorg. fiber than the metals. By adding the metallic element satisfying said 2 conditions to the matrix metals, the strength of the composite material is enhanced considerably.
