Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the mechanical strength of a titled material easily and inexpensively by coating the surfaces of ≥1 kind of specific inorg. fibers with ≥1 kind of inorg. or org. compds. of Ca, Cd, Sn and Sb then combining the same with marix metals.
CONSTITUTION: Inorg. fibers of ≥1 kind selected from carbon fibers, silica fibers, boron fibers, SiC fibers and alumina fibers are used as a reinforcing material and the surfaces thereof are coated with ≥1 kind of inorg. or org. compds. of Ca, Cd, Sn and Sb. Next, the inorg. fiber coated with said compds. is combined with matrix consisting of metals such as Al, Mg, Cu, Ni, Ti or their alloys. The coating compds. in the resultant composite material prevent the degradation of the fibers owing to the reaction between the fibers and the matrix metals and improve the mechanical strength of the material considerably.
