Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a coated layer having superior wear resistance, adhesive strength and a long service life by coating the surface of a sintered hard alloy member with Al2O3 contg. oxycarbo-titanium and/or oxycarbonitro-titanium. CONSTITUTION:A homogeneous coated layer having a composition consisting of 20-80vol% oxycarbo-titanium (TiCO) and/or oxycarbonitro-titanium (TiNCO) and the balance Al2O3 with inevitable impurities is formed by a chemical vapor deposition method on the surface of a sintered hard alloy member composed of a hard phase made chiefly of >=1 kind of compound selected from carbides and nitrides of IVa, Va and VIa group metals in the periodic table and a binding phase made chiefly of >=1 kind of iron group metal. Said TiCO and TiNCO satisfy a compositional formula Ti(C1-x-yNxOy)z (where 0<=x<=0.75, 0.05<=y<=0.5, (w+y)<=0.8 and 0.8<=z<=1.0). The structure of the layer is a fine homogeneous structure having <=1mum average grain size, and the thickness is 1-10mum. These layer is obtained by chemical deposition.
