Abstract

PURPOSE:To form hard surface-coating layer excellent in adhesive strength and wear resistance, by coating the surface of a super hard alloy member with an inner layer made of titanium carbonate and an outer layer made of alumina by chemical vapor deposition. CONSTITUTION:Super hard alloy member made by sintering hard substance such as carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides of 4a, 5a, 6a group metals of the periodic table using metals such as Fe, Ni, Co, W, Mo, Cr etc. as a bonding phase is kept at a reaction temp. 800-1,200 deg.C in the stream of mixed reaction gas cong. H2, CO as principal components, and Ti halogenide in order to apply chemical vapor deposition, hereby the surface of the super hard alloy member is coated with a titanium carbonate layer 0.5-10mum in thickness shown by a composition formula TiCxOy, where x is 0.9-0.4, y is 0.1-0.6. Successively the reaction gas is replaced with another reaction gas contg. AlCl3 to form Al2O3 layer 0.5-10mum in thickness by chemical vapor deposition. By this means, a hard coating layer having high adhesive strength to the super hard alloy member, forming no brittle layer or cracking is obtained.
