PURPOSE:To calculate a resemblance degree easily in a high speed, by accessing the data of every prescribed bits of the next standard pattern while the resemblance degree for data of every prescribed bits of a standard pattern outputted from a dictionary is calculated. CONSTITUTION:The quantized pattern divided as one character from a character detecting and segmenting part, which is not shown in the figure, is supplied to an input pattern register 1, and data of every bit string of this pattern is stored. Data phiN1-phiN9 of each bits string in standard patterns of only one pattern are stored across nonvolatile memories 31, 32 and 33 of a dictionary 2, and contents stored in respective addresses of memories 31-33, for example, data phiN1, phiN2 and phiN3 are latched in a latch part 4. These data are selected by a selecting part 5 and are supplied to an operating circuit 6. Contents of the register 1 are supplied to this circuit 6 also, and data of every bits string of a standard pattern corresponding to data of every bit string of the input pattern is multiplied in a multiplier 7 and is added in an adder 8 and is stored in a storage part 9.
