CONSTITUTION:A microwave having 0.3-30GHz frequency from a microwave transmitter and receiver 4 is projected onto the surface of molten steel 6 through a window 2 of a vacuum degassing tank 1, and a reflected microwave is detected by the receiver 4. A level of the molten metal surface is calculated from a time which has elapsed during said processing. In this way, a measurement is executed with high accuracy.
