Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as an antiepileptic agent, in high yield, without using highly toxic and expensive hydrocyanic acid compound, by the hydrolysis of a γ-chloro-β-hydroxybutyric acid ester in the presence of a catalyst, followed by amination.
CONSTITUTION: γ-Cholo-β-hydroxybutyric acid ester is hydrolyzed in the presence of an acidic catalyst such as hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, etc., or a basic catalyst such as alkali metal, etc., at 0W80°C, and the resulted γ-chloro-β-hydroxybutyric acid or its salt is neutralized. The product is concentrated if necessary, and aminated with an aminating agent (e.g. ammonia, ammonium carbonate, etc.) to obtain the objective compound. The amount of the catalyst is 1W100mol%, pref. 2W 50mol%, based on the γ-amino-β-hydroxybutyric acid ester, and that of the aminating agent is 5W100mol, pref. 20W60mol per 1mol of the γ-amino-β-hydroxybutyric acid.
