Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compounds of high purity in high yields, by hydrolyzing the reaction product between inexpensive glycolonitrile free of danger and ethylenediamine with an alkali, followed by addition of glycolonitrile and hydrolysis with an alkali.
CONSTITUTION: Ethylenediamine is reacted with glycolonitrile at ordinary temperature and pressure for about 1hr to form ethylenediaminediacetonitrile, which is hydrolyzed wiht an alkali, e.g. NaOH, etc. at a temperature of 60°C to the boiling point for 30min to 3hr to convert the nitrile group into the carboxylic acid (salt). Glycolonitrile is then reacted with the reaction mixture under the same conditions as described above, and the reaction product thus botained is hydrolyzed with an alkali to form the objective compounds. NH3 formed as a by-product is preferably driven out of the system quickly.
EFFECT: No need for dangerous hydrocyanic acid or sodium cyanide, and free from side reactions.
